8. Carnaval de Binche, Belgium
This carnival involves local men or ‘Gillies’ stomping around the streets in a parade wearing odd clown-like masks and shaking sticks to drive off the evil spirits. This is declared by the UNESCO as a ‘Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’. They also have a habit of throwing oranges at the audience. It is celebrated from 2nd – 4th March.
