18. Marlborough Sounds
The Marlborough Sounds are a group of indented river valleys on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The coastline is peppered with tiny inlets and bays with hills rising sharply on one side. Queen Charlotte, Pelorus and Kenepuru are the three main sounds with them playing host to a number of endangered species. A good part of the day can be spent hiking through the hills where you chance upon isolated settlements and unique ecosystems.
